Since I am new to fly tying I still struggle with elk and deer hair.  I use elk hair caddis dries frequently on my local streams, so I am constantly trying to figure out how to tie them quicker and better.  Nothing is more frustrating than tightening the thread just to have it spin the hair around the shank of the hook.

I used a pink thread body here so it's easier to see. This is what my elk hair used to look like.

It should be fairly easy to see how the hair has shifted toward the bottom of the hook shank.  Here is another shot.

 The method I will describe allows for quicker tying times and better overall profile.

 After stacking the hair, I pinch the tips with my left hand and use my right to spin thread around the loose ends.

 A few snug wraps to secure the material followed by two half-hitches.  I like to clean up the fly head end, but still leaving it long enough to be able to shape it after mounting it on the hook shank.

 A finished bundle.  I usually make a ton of 'em at one time in different sizes. Once the hair is lashed down to the hook, the oringinal thread wraps can be cut and removed.

Now all I need to do is tie up the caddis body, strap a hair bundle to the shank and tie it off.  Easy money.
